SAINT PETERSBURG — Sergey Pugachev, main owner of Mezhprombank, gained control of one of the largest Russian shipyards, i.e. St. Petersburg-based Severnaya Verf and entered negotiations with IST Group for setting up a holding on the basis of Severnaya Verf and its major competitor, Baltiyski Zavod.

Interfax Agency announced yesterday that shareholders of International Industrial Bank (MPB) registered a management company to take over all its non-banking assets. The bank promised to officially declare setting up a new structure, and to introduce its managers prior to the weekend. As expected, the reorganization will involve sales of part of property including Belye Nochi and Aki-Otyr oil companies.

Severnaya Verf confines itself to civilian orders
As leaked out yesterday, OAO Sovkomflot, ZAO United Industrial Corporation managing industrial assets of Mezhprombank and Ship-Building Yard Severnaya Verf (St Petersburg) signed an agreement of intent providing for building multipurpose bulk carriers and liquid natural gas ships. Speaking at a press-conference, Sergey Frank, head of Sovkomflot, said that during this year the intent could be turned into specific orders. Noteworthy is the fact that the document was signed a week after an agreement reached by owners of Baltiyski Zavod and Severnaya Verf for entrusting the latter exclusively with military orders.

IST leaves Severnaya Verf
Severnaya Verf and Baltiyski Zavod owners i.e. Mezhprombank and IST Group have decided not to confine themselves to division of market. Yesterday, Mezhprombank announced the purchase of 18% of Severnaya Verf shares from IST. Having evaluated this interest as high as USD 10 M, experts believe this transaction to put a period to the war between the two wharves.

Major private Russian wharves i.e. Baltiyski Zavod and Severnaya Verf have finally agreed on dividing spheres of influence. Baltiyski Zavod will devote itself to building civilian vessels, while Severnaya Verf – war ships. Experts believe that this is an only way for avoiding needless competition between Russian plants in the market, the turnover of which could reach USD 2.75 billion in this year.

Mezhprombank has proved nearly the latest major bank to single out its industrial assets as an individual structure i.e. United Industrial Corporation (UIC). This occurred in the last summer. At the same time, Mezhprombank was left by its founders and its main owners Tuva’s senator Sergey Pugachev and entrepreneur Sergey Veremeenko.

Ship builders taking measure of each other
Yesterday, Ilya Klebanov, plenipotentiary representative of the President in North-Western territory stated that Severnaya Verf and Baltiyski Zavod may sign an agreement for setting up a joint company. Spokesman of Mezhprombank that owns controlling interest in Severnaya Verf confirmed fact of the negotiations. Thus the idea of a joint shipyard that has been discussed during the recent years proves realizable on the eve of tenders for the Russian Navy frigates and obtaining by Russia a new export order from Indian Navy.

The long-suffering renovation project of Sredniye Torgovye Ryady (“Middle Mall”) in the Red Square, Moscow will soon be moved out of the dead point. As it became known to Vedomosti, Mezhprombank is about to invest USD 250 M so that to turn old buildings into a trading-hotel complex. The bank has already signed an agreement of intent with Russian President’s administrative affairs office that owns the shopping rows.
